Ningyo Depicted

As ningyo culture flourished in the Edo period, ningyo were even depicted in paintings and prints. Images of a woman enjoying her ningyo or children playing in front of a display of ningyo for a seasonal celebration give us a sense of ningyo as part of everyday life. Ukiyo-e, which depicted the chic, lavish lives that Edoites favored, are particularly full of hina ningyo and other types of these small treasures.
